Developing New and Diverse Philanthropies at Willamette University

by Joyce White, Executive Director
GRANTMAKERS of Oregon and Southwest Washington

This past academic year I was asked to be on an Advisory Board for Willamette University’s Atkinson Graduate School of Management Grant Program. While sounding impressive, I was only a bystander to the inaugural program introducing graduate students to the world of philanthropy and grantmaking. Five students from the class of 2017 participated in the program, beginning in August and ending in April.

Under the direction of faculty members Dean Debra Ringold, Elsa Stavney, Nicole Thibodeau and Ron Hays, the students began with a blank slate and $150,000 provided by a generous donor. The assignment: learn how to be a grantmaker. The students crafted an RFP to let the community know they were open for business. A website was developed to enhance communication and access. Priority areas were chosen:  education, green energy and clean technology, arts and culture. Eligibility and criteria were developed and shared with organizations serving Marion, Polk, Benton, Linn, and Yamhill Counties.
