Real news, fake news, legitimacy, integrity, democracy, and civil society — Americans are re-familiarizing themselves with these concepts daily in the current administration. Independent journalism is essential to a healthy democracy but faces many challenges in the current political and funding climate, and many grantmakers have questions about how to best support nonprofit media or whether they should.

What do we mean by “independent media?” Why do we need investigative reporting? What does philanthropic financing for nonprofit newsrooms look like? And what are the opportunities and challenges for independent print journalism outlets locally?
