DESCRIPTION:
The 2020 wildfires came on the heels of public health and social crises that left us all trying to maintain resilience and cope with significant upheavals. In this workshop, you will hear from an expert panel about the ravages of wildfires and how they impacted vulnerable rural, especially Latinx, communities. You will also learn about the community recovery time-lines and lessons learned from the wildfires in rural California in recent years. With another year of below average water supply, it is anticipated that another wildfire is imminent and the panel will share how philanthropy can prepare for the next season of wildfires in our region.
Laura Isiordia
Field Coordinator
The Ford Family Foundation
Laura has an extensive background in community leadership. Before coming to The Ford Family Foundation, she served as the executive director for CAPACES Leadership Institute in Woodburn, which provides leadership development and capacity building for Latinos and Latino organizations. Born and raised in Mexico, Isiordia immigrated to Oregon in 1985. She began working as a farmworker while attending school. At Farmworker Housing Development Corporation (FHDC), she served as a residents services director and became the program’s community leadership director overseeing educational and leadership programs, community building and residents services at FHDC housing communities.
Isiordia also has a background in lay health education and outreach. She has served part-time with the Oregon Department of Human Services as a foster/adoptive parent Spanish instructor. She has been involved with several research studies in the Latino farmworker community, and she has been published in the Journal of Biosocial Science.
Jovanni Tricerri
Vice President, Regional Recovery & Partnerships
North Valley Community Foundation
Jovanni coordinates the emergency response and recovery strategy for Camp Fire relief and development for North Valley Community Foundation, which focuses on a strategic and collaborative approach to disaster recovery following the devastating 2018 Camp Fire and the 2020 North Complex fire in Northern California. His work focuses on addressing complex issues across cultural, political and industry sectors to create collaborative working solutions.
With 20 years experience in international relief and development work, Jovanni has travelled to over 35 countries as a strategic advisor on issues related to poverty, international relations, leadership development and peace and reconciliation initiatives. He also currently serves as an advisor to several international non-profit organizations in Central and South America and South.
Alan Kwok
Director of Disaster Resilience
Northern California Grantmakers
As Director of Disaster Resilience, Alan brings years of experience working in Bay Area disaster response and leadership in the emerging field of community resilience to Northern California Grantmakers (NCG). Before coming to NCG, Alan served as Director of Learning at San Diego Grantmakers, where he oversaw their programming in social equity, corporate social responsibility, collective giving, and professional development. He recently received his PhD in Emergency Management at the Joint Centre for Disaster Research (JCDR) at Massey University in Wellington, New Zealand. His thesis focused on the social conditions and dynamics between people and organizations in neighborhood-based disaster resilience.
His ongoing research and practice in disaster management draws from state-of-the-art practices across the country and globally. He has also previously served as the Manager of Ready Neighborhoods, a FEMA-award winning community resilience initiative at the Bay Area Chapter of the American Red Cross, where he helped build community disaster capacities in over 20 neighborhoods across Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Francisco, San Mateo, and Solano counties.
